What is a Storyboard and Purpose?

A storyboard is a graphic organiser that gives an overview of the movie/video you will film; it allows to pre-visualise what will be filmed. It gives a descriptive shot by shot view of what happens in the scene and what the camera will capture, what will be inside the frame. It also explains the timing/duration of a shot; the location; Camera angle/movement; Sound and Lighting. It is a complete description of what needs to be shot.

Storyboards offer visual aids for the crew and director of the project, because they simplify the complete idea into small frames of information, making it easier to understand. It helps give a sense to how the shot should be filmed. This saves a lot of time and money, because it can be easily changed and manipulated with little cost. The storyboard also saves time on the shoot day because it gives a checklist of all the shots that need to be taken; and because it is in a visual format everyone on set can be on the same page. By saving time, it in turn saves money.

The storyboard is also helpful in the editing stages because it gives the editor an idea of the directors perspective.
