Emailing make-up artist about hair

Not only will our make-up aritst do the make-up for our video she will also do hair, as she is specialised in both areas. We sent her an email confirming our make-up choices and explaining the hair styles we want.

Below are screenshots of the email:

Emailing Make-up Artist

We sent an email to the make-up and hair stylist - Jackie Witney. She has had over 20 years of experience in hair styling and has attended the Iver academy to study make-up artistry. We sent an email explaining the make up we wanted. Below are screenshots of the email we sent.

Confirming our Shoot Day

We have had our shoot day confirmed for Wednesday 2nd of November. As part of our process we emailed all the actors and dancers to inform them of the shoot day, we will need all the costumes, props and set ready by wednesday so we can film.

We also handed out blue cards ( a permission slip they have to fill out in order to have the day off school) to all of the actors and dancers. For extra measures we also sent an email to confirm the shoot day.

Below is the email we sent to the actors:

Arrival of costumes

Our costumes arrived on the wednesday, Saskia and Ella tried on some of the costumes in our group to get a sense of size in case we needed to make returns.

Saskia tried the heels for the dancers and found them to fit well. However, this was a problem because Saskia is a size 5 shoe and the shoe was a size 6 meaning that the shoe would be too tight on the dancers.
We got the dancers to try on the shoes but the shoe's were oddly big for them, this meant it would be difficult to dance in them;because their feet are not secure in the shoe. Instead of returning the shoes, which would be an additonal cost. We will use the heels for the silhouette wheel and screen. For the dance sequence we will find another pair of shoes that fit the dancers perfectly and have a strap so that their feet are held in the shoe when they dance.

We thought that the pants for the dancers worked perfectly and the cut out flared pants for the lead singer.

We also thought that he white mesh skirt and white crop top worked well with the lead singer.

We did find that the lead singers pants were slightly long, however this could be corrected by sewing the bottom of the pant and wearing high heels.

For the cost of the costumes we decided to split the cost amongst the 3 of us so that it is a fair contribution from everyones behalf.

Ordering Costumes

Because our costumes are quite specific, we had to order them from online stores.
Our checklist was:
  • 3 pairs of heels
  • 3 cat suits
  • 3 pants for dancers and lead singer
  • 3 tops for dancers and lead singer
  • 1 white mesh skirt
  • 1 white crop top
  • Jeans for Rapper
  • Shirt for Rapper
  • Timberland boots
Because our list of costumes was large we ordered them altogether to make shipping easier and to recieve discounts on bulk purchases. We also used our student discounts to buy the clothes for cheaper. We ordered it for one day delivery, so we expect the costumes to arrive tommorow so that we can have the actors try on the clothes.

Organising Props, Make-up and Hair

In the same that we created a chart for costumes and assigned people in the group to be responsible to get them we did the same with props, hair and make-up.

Below is a chart describing all the props, make-up and hair we want and the people responsible for it.

Planning and organising costumes

We got into our group and began planning the costumes for each person in the video (lead singer, rapper, dancers). We created a chart that describes each item of clothing and besides it the person in the group who was responsible in bringing it in.

Make-up choice

Originally, we were going to do the make up by ourselves, because it is not that difficult. However, the media department suggested we hire a professional make-up artists so that the make-up would look as professional as possible. For the fluorescent light maze element, we will have the lead singer with dark shiny purple lipstick and purple/turqouise blue eyeshadow. We thought these colours would work harmoniously with the pink and ice blue lights.

For the dance sequence when the lead singer and dancers are lit and visible, we want her to have simplistic make-up. Such as a matte lipstick, and earth tones for the eyeshadows, we also want her to have large eyelashes and thick eyeliner.

We chose this make-up ideas, because they are current make-up trends (such as the Kylie Jenner inspiration) and our target audience are females who are 18-21. The target audience will identify with this because it is current and relatable to them. According to Dyer's Star Theory, the aritsts' ideology should represent the audience marketed to. Therefore the audience will copy the aritsts ideology and style, which means a more dedicated fan base; thus more money made for the industry. Additonally, the dramatic and trendy make-up choices connote a powerful feminine tone. A popular genre convention in R&B music videos (especially if it's a female artist) is to have a strong female empowernment message behind their video and song. We hope our make-up choices will exude a strong/confident personality for our artist and will heighlight the genre conventions we used from R&B music.
