What is Qualitative and Quantitative Research

Quantitative research collects data in a numerical form which then can be turned into use-able statistics. Quantitative data is much more structured than qualitative data. The data is numerical so that it can be placed into ranks and order. This data can then be used to create graphs, in order to generalize results to a larger sample population. This type of data can show patterns, similarities and anomalies in the findings. Quantitative data is collected through surveys and closed questions.

Qualitative research gathers data that is not in a numerical form. This type of data is collected through open-ended questions and interviews. It tends to be descriptive data and therefore is difficult to analyse than quantitative. This research is useful because it gives a much more detailed view of the sample you are testing. It can show how people think or feel about a certain thing.

We are going to create a survey which will ask 30 closed questions about the music video, Digi-pack and overall campaign. This will allow us to collate the quantitative data that we can then place on a graph to give a visual representation of the data. Then we will have 30 open-ended questions for the music video, Digi-pack and overall campaign. We will also film them answering the open-ended questions, and we will engage in to a discussion with them, to get some personal feedback.

We are using both open and closed questions, so that we have a mixture of numerical data that can then be placed on graphs to give an empirical representation of our feedback.

Qualitative data will give us detailed/descriptive data that can give us more personal and opinionated feedback of our overall campaign.
