Editing our Website After Feedback

After having recieved our feedback we decided to review our website to look at any changes we could do to improve the desgin of the website. One of the main areas we focused on was on the homepage, because we had created the website on a Macbook Pro using Google Chrome, if the website was opened on Internet Explorer the entire layout of the homepage became scrambled and all the social media links were jumbled across the screen. Therefore, we decided to move the social media buttons lower down on the homepage, in order to prevent the scrammbling of the website across different internet browsers. It also created space on the homepage and made it look cleaner and less messy.

We then also added a light box (image below) that would open across the screen as soon as you entered the website. This would welcome the audience to the website and make them aware of our artist's new album. This would be a quick and easy way to market the album of our artist without the viewer even going through the website.

Even though, we made some changes it was not as difficult to alter our website as it was to alter the editing of our music video or digipak. This is because the oline software we used to create our website 'Wix' was easy to use. Additonally, the website was the last product we created for our music campaign, therefore by this time we had a solid idea and understanding of our artists star image. This made it easier to construct the artists representation on our website.

Website Focus Group

In our group we conducted a focus group for our website, where we asked memebers of our target audience question relating to our website.

We recorded the feedback on a chart so that we could then extrapolate the data and display it on a graph:

Below is a graph of our data that we collected from the feedback:

Website construction on Wix

To create our website we used Wix, a free online software to build our website.
Wix offered us different templates and tools to create our artists website.

The website is an integral part of the music campaign because it offers an interaction between the audience and the artist. The website needed to be engaging, easy to use and visually striking in order to intrigue audiences.

With Wix we were allowed to include social media buttons that would link the website with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We offered concert tickets/tour schedules and also a merchandise page; where fans could buy artist related products.

Screenshots from our website:

We used Adobe Photoshop CC to edit images for the website and most importantly we used it to create the background of the homepage; this was a GIF that changed images of the artist every few seconds.

Below is the construction of the GIF:

For the font of the website we used Marzo, this is because it is a sleek and easy to read font; therefore making it easier for audiences to understand and navigate through the website. For the name of the artist on the website we used the same font as we did on the Digipak, this linked the two products together. It also made it look like our artist’s signature; this made the audience feel closer to the artist. This links in with Dyer’s Star Theory paradox which states an artist ‘must be both ordinary and extraordinary’; which would make the audience feel engaged with the artist and therefore strengthen the fan base.

The purpose and construction of our website is crucial for promoting out artist in an ever-growing online age.

Why do artists use websites and how do they use them?

A website allows an artist to construct their image and showcase their ideologies to their fan base. Therefore, their audiences will gain more admiration for them and will share their views; which will strengthen the relationship between the artist and audience.

The use of the internet is key for artists because not only does it advertise them but it allows them to achieve a global following, which increases their fan base and increases their following. The website allows the artist to officially present themselves and provide more info about themselves, ideologies and persona.

Most websites are connected to social media platforms, these offer the ability for audiences to discuss the artist across multiple online platforms, which in turn increases the artists status and notoriety.

Social media and websites create a channel for artists and fans to communicate and connect; this follows Dyer’s star theory paradox that ‘The star must be both present and absent’ ; although the artist is not physically there, they are communicating to their fans.  The website is also a place for the artist to inform the audience about their latest album, tours and merchandise.

A website is an ever-changing piece of marketing and advertising that changes as the artist grows. It gives live updates to what the artist is up to so that they are current with their audience. Apart from advertising and selling their image,  it is a method for the artist to sell concert tickets, albums, merchandise and other artist related products.

Smaller Focus Group

We conducted a smaller focus group in order to gain a wider range of feedback. We also wanted to consolidate the feedback we received from our larger focus group. Saskia developed and changed some of the questions from our questionnaire so that they could be more clear and allow for more constructive feedback.
Below are the updated questions:

Digipack –
Closed questions:
1)    Do you think the poses we use represent female empowerment?
2)    Would you change the Digi-pack and have more than just her feature?
3)    Would you say our Digi-pack gives out the R&B feel?
4)    Do you believe hard-copied digi-packs are still regularly used and brought?
Open questions:
1)    What represents the genre of R&B for you?
2)    What would you change on our digipack?

Music Video –
Closed questions:
1)    Was the genre clear throughout?
2)    Did we use the female and the rapper in a good way, or did we overuse one whilst underusing the other?
3)    Did the video hold your attention from start to finish?
Open questions:
1)    Which element do you think should star the most?
2)    Why would you have the dancers star more?
3)    If you could would you change the rappers position in the video more (i.e.  incorporate him more)

Overall Campaign:
1)    Does the colour scheme match the R&B genre?
2)    Is the campaign a useful insight into this artists brand/overall image?

Below are videos of the smaller focus group answering the questions:

Results from our Large Focus Group

After recording our feedback and collating the questionnaires that our focus group did, Saskia Tarn in our group created some tables and graphs to display the data. The tables and graphs all show the quantitative data we collected.

Firstly we asked the age of our focus group and found that the majority were 16 years old.

We then asked them to answer yes and no questions for the digi-pack. The number who answered yes or no are written in the table.

Below is a graph of the results:

Below are the results of the music video questions:

Both charts show the same results just in different formats. The one above shows the percentage and the one below shows the physical amount of people.

Lastly these are the results of the overall campaign:

Feedback from Large Focus Group

Below are some videos of the feedback from the large focus group. We had a discussion with them about the music video, Digi-pack and overall campaign.

- There is too much focus on the artist on the digi-pack. We would need to add different elements on the album to add variety and to make it more interesting.

-We need to emphasise the R&B genre throughout the campaign especially on the digi-pack.

- They also mentioned that there are parts in the music video where there are many shots and it gets too busy; and there are some parts that are slow and get boring. We need to experiment with the order of the shots and duration in order to keep the audience’s attention and to prevent repetition.

- One of the main notes was that we should include more of the dancers in the music video.
